An extract from 'You Can Create! 24 Ways to Unlock Your Creative Potential' by Richard P John

“If people knew how hard I had to work to gain my mastery, it would not seem so wonderful at all.’

Mistakes and errors are a part of the creative process. Difficulties and frustration are just a natural part of creating a work of art.
No work was created perfectly in one draft.

We do though, as in all aspects of our life, tend to learn from mistakes, knowing how to handle the situation differently the next time the same problem occurs. It’s how you learn from your mistakes, not the mistakes themselves, that matters.

However, don’t be afraid of making mistakes and don’t reject them entirely. You may find that something you didn’t intend to do works better than what you originally had in mind.

Every successful company has made at least one bad product or marketing decision.

The greatest artists and creators in history didn’t necessarily make more great work than anyone else, they just simply produced more work than others.

Mistakes in creativity don’t have to mean you’ve made something wrong, just a different way of doing things.

Why not try creating something intentionally bad? Write a terrible poem, make an object that doesn’t serve its purpose, write a song that sucks. You can be guaranteed that your next effort will be many times better!

If you’re feeling doubtful, focus your attention on doubting your ideas and not yourself. Doubting ideas and work is not a negative thing, it should motivate you to refine that which you already have.

Skills need constant refining and adjusting. The more you refine and adjust your skills, the easier the creative process will become.

Don’t get into the mindset that making a mistake or failing equals the end. These are a natural part of creating and they bring you closer to the finishing line of a product.

Off-days and bad works are part of the process. Don’t let them get you down.

Embrace them.
